Notifications

Choose how each kind of Activity reaches you, by push, email or Slack.

Rally can tell you about anything in your Activity list:

  • Mentions. Someone @mentions you in a Thread or a Breakout.
  • Added to a thread. Someone adds you to a Thread or Breakout. (If you created it yourself, Rally assumes you already know.)
  • New threads. Someone starts a Thread you can open.
  • New breakouts. Someone starts a Breakout you can open.
  • Rally finished. Rally finishes working in a Thread or Breakout you take part in.
  • Merges. Someone merges a Breakout into a Thread you can open, or a Thread into a Channel you can see.

Choosing how each one reaches you

Open Settings → Notifications. Under Notify me about, each kind has a button for every way Rally can reach you. Click one to turn it on or off; a dark button is on. Choose any mix, or none.

  • Push alerts every Mac, iPhone and browser where you are signed in and have notifications on.
  • Email comes from Rally notifications@rallywith.ai with an Open in Rally link. For a mention you can reply to post into the Thread, as Email into Rally explains.
  • Slack is a direct message from the Rally app. It appears once Rally is installed in your Slack workspace and you have linked your account with Connect Rally. Other messaging apps that can reach you appear here too.

With none chosen, that kind only shows in Activity and your daily digest. Nothing is sent another way instead.

When the window is narrow, each kind shows one button naming what is on, such as Push and Slack. Click it for a list you can tick.

Your choices apply on every device in that Organization. By default, mentions and additions come by push and Slack, and everything else by push.

Notification text is plain: formatting is removed and mentions appear as @Name.

Notifications on your Mac

Open Settings → Notifications. At the top, under On this Mac, one switch turns alerts on this Mac on or off. It is on unless you turn it off, and your choices under Notify me about still apply to your other devices.

  • Alerts arrive even when Rally is closed.
  • Click an alert and Rally opens the exact Thread or Breakout it is about.
  • Alerts are grouped by Thread, with its Breakouts in the same group, so one busy Thread does not bury the rest.
  • The first time, macOS asks whether Rally may send notifications. If you said no, the settings page says Notifications are turned off in macOS. with an Open System Settings button to change your mind.

Note

The macOS permission prompt, and a few other system messages, may still say "workspace". That is Rally's old word for an Organization.

If you cannot find Notifications in Settings at all, notifications have not been switched on for your account yet. Your teammates will have to keep mentioning you the old-fashioned way, loudly, across the office.

The number on the app icon

Rally's icon in the Dock carries a badge: the same number as the Threads button in the sidebar, counting the Threads in your Organization that are waiting on you, plus any requests to join that you can approve. Each Thread counts once, however many messages it has. If you belong to several Organizations, the badge shows the count for whichever one notified you most recently, not a total.

Notifications on your iPhone

The iPhone app sends the same alerts. Tap your avatar at the top left of the Threads tab to open Settings, and use Notify me on this iPhone about mentions and additions under Notifications. Tap an alert and the app opens that Thread or Breakout.

If you turned notifications off for Rally in iOS, the switch says Notifications are turned off in iOS Settings. with an Open Settings button.

The small print

  • Turning the switch off, or refusing permission, takes that device off the list. Rally does not send an email instead unless you chose email.
  • Signing out of Rally on a Mac stops notifications to that Mac.
  • If your device is off or offline, Apple holds alerts for up to 24 hours.
  • Now and then the same alert can arrive twice. Rally would rather tell you twice than not at all.

Notifications and the digest

Notifications are for the moment something happens. The daily digest, on the next page, lists whatever is still unread at the start and end of your day. Most people keep both: notifications for "come here now" and the digest for "here is what you have not looked at".
